Support for Families and Carers

At The Eating Disorders Clinic, we know eating disorders affect the whole family. Online care can make support easier to access.

Online sessions can be easier to arrange for parents, siblings, and the individual. Everyone can join from home. This can help the conversation feel more natural.

For parents of children or adolescents with restrictive eating, we can provide online consultations to discuss strategies for the dining table, helping to reduce the tension around meals. Being in the home environment allows us to offer more tailored, situational advice that is immediately applicable to your daily routine. We also support a wide range of presentations, including anorexia treatment, bulimia treatment, binge eating disorder treatment, and ARFID treatment.

The "Formulation" Process: Understanding Before Intervention

One of the cornerstones of our expert care is clinical formulation. Unlike a simple diagnosis, which just tells you what the problem is called, a formulation explains how the problem works for you.

During your initial sessions, we work together to build a map of your experiences. We look at:

  • Predisposing Factors: What in your history (genetics, personality, life events, or neurodivergence) made you more vulnerable to an eating disorder?

  • Precipitating Factors: What was happening in your life when the eating difficulties started?

  • Perpetuating Factors: What is keeping the cycle going right now? This might include certain beliefs about control, sensory relief, or physiological changes caused by malnutrition.

  • Protective Factors: What are your strengths? What do you value? What are the things in your life that will support your recovery?

This formulation is a live document. It evolves as we learn more about you. By starting with this deep understanding, our online eating disorder treatment becomes a collaboration rather than a series of instructions. We aren't here to tell you what to do; we are here to help you navigate the path that makes sense for your brain and your life.

A Gentle Next Step

Deciding to seek treatment is a brave choice, and it's okay to feel unsure. You don't need to have all the answers, and you don't need to be "ready" to change everything overnight.

We invite you to explore the possibilities of online support at your own pace. If you'd like a gentle place to begin, you can visit our homepage or get to know our clinicians and the way we work before deciding on any next step. If you are curious about how our team could support you or a loved one, a gentle next step is to book a free initial 20-minute call.

This is a low-pressure opportunity to:

  • Meet a member of our team.

  • Ask questions about our online process.

  • Discuss whether our multidisciplinary, neurodiversity-informed approach is the right fit for your needs.

You have spent a long time managing these challenges on your own. You don't have to navigate the next part alone. Whether you are looking for an anorexia assessment online or ongoing psychological support, we are here to provide expert care: right where you feel safest.
